Is your living room a stage? With your kids as the players? Maybe your child walks into the kitchen with a flourish and your teen sings in the shower. Maybe someone is busily scribbling stories in a notebook or it could be that your kids are just acting up! Either way, it sounds like a week at a summer theatre camp is in order! Storybook Theatre, one of Calgary’s premiere theatres for young audiences, is back with summer camps and programming to give kids a place on the stage. It’s time to shine!
For decades, Storybook Theatre has been delighting children of all ages with charming performances and popular stories. Every season they bring together incredible talent, both on and off the stage, to present theatre productions that are suitable for the whole family. Stories brought to life can entertain, inspire, and connect us, and summer camps are a unique opportunity for kids to explore different perspectives and dream about who they are.
The summer theatre camps and programs at Storybook Theatre are designed to take kids ages 6 – 17 on a theatre journey, where they can express themselves, create, and perform in a safe and supportive environment. Camps run from July to early August and they all include a final presentation that represents the contributions of all the students. If finances are an issue, be sure to look into subsidized programming. Depending on age, you have two exciting options to choose from in the summer of 2023.
Summer Theatre Camps
The Summer Theatre Camps are designed so kids ages 6 – 12 can create a play in a week of fun! These camps run weekly from July 4 – August 11, 2023. Here students will learn how to navigate the creation of their own play in a safe theatre space. With writing, producing, casting, and rehearsing, kids will gain confidence and be empowered through taking ownership of a creative project. They will show off their accomplishments to their family when they present their play with the final theatre presentation on the last day of camp.
Summer Spotlight: James and the Giant Peach JR.
Looking for more? Older kids and teens can attend a three-week Summer Spotlight, creating theatre magic, while they work on James and the Giant Peach JR. Based on one of Roald Dahl’s most quirky stories, James and the Giant Peach JR. features a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming story. This adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery will be a classic. Kids ages 9 – 12 years can attend from July 4 – 21, 2023, and teens ages 13 – 17 years can attend from July 24 – August 11, 2023. Each group will present a final performance for friends and family on the last Thursday evening of their session.
After the last couple of years, it’s definitely time to give kids a place where they can act out and be celebrated! For all kids who are creative, love drama, and need some summer fun, registration is now open for you to make your entrance and take the stage.
