Wings Over Springbank Airshow: Excitement Comes to Our Skies

Wings Over Springbank (Family Fun Calgary)

The world has enjoyed more than 100 years of powered flight, but it is still an incredible thing to see those F-18s go thundering overhead or the Snowbirds swoop, roll and criss-cross. There’s nothing like the excitement of an invigorating air show and from July 27 – 28, 2019, Wings Over Springbank is bringing excitement back to our skies! This classic air show will take place at the Springbank Airport, just west of Calgary, against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

This year’s Wings Over Springbank air show is themed, “A Tradition in Excellence.” With over 60 aircraft on the ground and in the sky, the show features performances from the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Team Rocket, the F-18 Demo Team, Brent Handy, and the Erickson Aircraft Collection.

Headlining the event are the iconic Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Following in the footsteps of the Golden Centennaires air demonstration team, formed in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s Centennial, the Snowbirds are honoured to uphold their proud legacy. They inspire all Canadians with skill, professionalism, and teamwork. Plus, they put on a fabulous show!

Also in the air will be the CF-18 Canadian Forces Demonstration Team. As the Royal Canadian Air Force’s fighter jet, the modernized CF-18 is a front-line aircraft and is always spectacular to see, honouring the dedication and professionalism of our Canadian Air Force.

In addition, the show in the air will feature the daring stunts and exploits of the aerobatic pilots, like Brent Handy, who offers an adrenaline-filled, heart-pumping series of tumbles, torque rolls, and loops. The Erickson Aircraft Collection, a vintage collection of 20 rare aircraft, most of which are in flying condition, will also be featured. They’ll be mostly on the ground, but don’t miss seeing the thundering performances of the P40 Kittyhawk and the P47 Thunderbolt.

The air show itself will take place from 12 – 4 pm, but the grounds are open from 10 am – 5 pm, as there are many planes and exhibits to encounter on the ground. You can snack on a variety of foods and let the kids have some fun on one of the numerous bouncers while you check out the planes and chat with the pilots. There will also be special celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Springbank Airport. Be sure to come early enough to check it all out before the show begins!

Daily admission for Wings Over Springbank is $30 for adults and $20 for children and seniors. (Children 3 and younger are free.) Parking is limited but there will be a free Park N Ride service. To up the experience, VIP packages, including parking, admission, food and drink, and optimal showline seating, are available.

So, come out for a great show, set against a spectacular backdrop! Feel the thunder of the jets and be amazed by the aerobatics of today and the courage and accomplishments of the pilots and planes from years past.  Imagine yourself in the private jet and enjoy the dozens of other vintage and private aircraft on static display.
