Wings Over Springbank Airshow: Excitement Comes to Our Skies

Wings Over Springbank Airshow (Family Fun Calgary)

I don’t know about you, but when those F-18s go thundering overhead or the Snowbirds swoop, roll and criss-cross, I want to jump and cheer. There’s nothing like the excitement and fascination of a good, invigorating air show! The precision of the aerobatic pilots and the demonstration teams inspire amazement. The vintage aircraft that shaped our history are seen on the ground and in the sky, reminding us of all that we’ve accomplished. Stories abound from the people who love to fly these planes (pilots generally love to talk about their planes!), and if you need a boost, you can top the day off with a bag of mini donuts or a snow cone!

Wings Over Springbank is coming to Springbank Airport on July 29th and 30th, with over 60 aircraft in the air and on the ground. Headlining the event are the iconic Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Following in the footsteps of the Golden Centennaires air demonstration team, formed in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s Centennial, the Snowbirds are honoured to uphold their proud legacy, especially during this year of celebration. They inspire all Canadians by showcasing the skill, professionalism, and teamwork of the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces and proudly honour our strong military heritage.

Also in the air will be the CF-18 Canadian Forces Demonstration Team. As the Royal Canadian Air Force’s fighter jet, the modernized CF-18 is a front-line aircraft, and is always spectacular to see. This year’s demo team is painted to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

In addition, the show in the air will feature the daring stunts and exploits of the aerobatic pilots, and the Erickson Aircraft Collection, a vintage collection of 20 rare aircraft, most of which are in flying condition. Be on hand to see the P-51 Mustang and the F4U Corsair performing.

The air show itself will take place from 12 – 4 pm, but the grounds are open from 10 am – 5 pm, as there are many planes and exhibits to encounter on the ground. This year, Airbase Arizona is bringing their B25 – Maid in the Shade as a static display to educate others about the incredible machines and heroes in combat aviation history. Be sure to come early enough to check it all out, before the show begins!

Daily admission for Wings Over Springbank is $25 for adults, and $15 for children and seniors. Until July 1st, if you use the promo code “CDN150” you will receive 15% off ticketsParking is limited and available for a small fee, and there will be a free Park N Ride service. To up the experience, VIP packages, including parking, admission, food and drink, and optimal showline seating, are available.

Come out for a great show, set against a spectacular back-drop! Feel the thunder of the jets and be amazed by the aerobatics of today and the courage and accomplishments of the pilots and planes from years past. On the grounds, you can snack on a variety of foods, and let the kids have some fun on one of the numerous bouncers while you check out the planes and exotic cars. Imagine yourself in the private jet and enjoy the dozens of other vintage and private aircraft on static display. If you need more convincing, read here and here about first-hand experiences!
