Do you have a young person who treasures the power of words like the air they breathe? Or does your teen cherish books, revere stories, and craft fascinating worlds of their own? If you have a young writer in your household, you know what I’m talking about and you need to know about YouthWrite Summer Camps!

YouthWrite Summer Camps are about writing, including wordplay and creative expression. Participants will learn the crafting of language and the power of a story, and have a wonderful week doing it! Instructors and supervisory staff work hard to create the right environment for all kids, using a variety of learning styles. Your kids will feel free to take artistic and creative risks while they find their voice, in a safe, welcoming space.

Of course, YouthWrite Summer Camps are about writing. But you don’t have to stop there! A YouthWrite camp is so much more. Kids can meet other aspiring writers and build connections with kids who think as they do. Campers will be challenged and encouraged to explore new things they’ve never tried, like yoga and writing, drumming and words, songwriting, illustrating, cartooning, screenwriting, improvisation and writing, body percussion and words, and more. YouthWrite has a multi-disciplinary approach to writing and creating, in keeping with the advances of the 21st century. Not only will they be building skills in their passion, but they might learn something they never knew about themselves!

YouthWrite Summer Camps (Family Fun Calgary)

The YouthWrite Summer Camps take place at the FCJ Centre in southwest Calgary. You can choose between a day camp or an overnight camp, but even the day camps run from 8:30 am – 8:30 pm, so kids can leave their regular lives and families behind to enjoy a retreat, perfect for writing and wordplay.

The camp for ages 10 – 14 runs from June 30 – July 5, 2024, and the camp for ages 15 – 19 runs from July 7 – 12, 2024. Whether you choose day or overnight, you’ll find 12 hours of daily instruction and activities led by highly qualified instructional and supervisory staff, supervised meals, break times, and evening programs. All supplies are provided, including meals and snacks (daily breakfast is only included for overnighters) and a complimentary copy of YouthWrite: The Magazine. Don’t forget to dress for the weather and bring indoor and outdoor shoes.

New this year is a Write 2 Film Day Camp from July 15 – 19, 2024. This camp runs from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm and is a multi-disciplinary filmmaking day camp for teens ages 14 – 19. Whether their interests lie behind the camera or in front of it, they will collaborate on a short film, supported by a team of professionals. Participants will start with brainstorming ideas and writing a screenplay and end with a polished film.

Camps at YouthWrite fill up quickly, though, so don’t delay. Registration is now open and you’ll enjoy an early bird discount until April 12, 2024. These camps will provide a wonderful retreat atmosphere to inspire your kids and give them a lively and entertaining week to remember!

Words, stories, and books are foundational in our society.  And young writers matter at YouthWrite. Sign up now for a great week of words and play.
