There’s nothing quite like the magic of gliding across an outdoor skating rink with your family on a crisp winter day. Whether you’re wobbling on your first pair of skates or perfecting your spins, outdoor rinks offer a festive and affordable way to enjoy quality time together. Outdoor rinks are particularly special in Metro Vancouver, because our temperatures don’t allow for backyard rinks or frozen-over ponds. Skating on an outdoor rink feels even more special, and we’re grateful that there are places to go and provide our kids with this little piece of Canadian culture. With sparkling lights, fresh air, and plenty of room to play, these rinks turn an ordinary winter afternoon into a memorable family adventure.
Robson Square Skating Rink:
The Robson Square Ice Rink is located in the very heart of downtown, next to the Vancouver Art Gallery and Robson Street shopping. It is covered by a clear dome, allowing for protection from rain, but is otherwise outside, letting you feel the breeze on your face, letting you feel the energy of the city around you.
Dates: Open December 1, 2025 – February 28, 2026
Times: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Sunday-Thursday); 9:00 AM – 11:00 PM (Friday & Saturday)
*Plus, it’s open on Christmas Day!*
Rentals: $5.00/person. Skate sharpening available for $5.00 as well.
Helmets mandatory for ages 12 & under.
Shipyard Skate Plaza:
The Shipyards Skate Plaza in North Vancouver is the largest outdoor skating rink in the region and is set against the beautiful backdrop of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains. Until the end of February, they offer daily skating from 12 – 8 pm, as well as free helmets and skate aides. Skate rentals are available for a small fee.

Rentals: Skates: $8/adult; $5.50/kids. Helmets and skate aids free.

Grouse Mountain Mountaintop Skating Pond:
Vancouver’s *only* mountaintop skating pond is just one of the many activities included in a Mountain Admission Ticket to Grouse Mountain. Bring your skates up with you for a magical afternoon in a winter wonderland, or rent them for a small fee.
