The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas story that’s been modified and shaped into many interesting incarnations, from the stage to the screen. The ubiquitous Nutcracker appears in our Christmas decorating and the music has been said to be the most played music ever written. Alberta Ballet dances The Nutcracker every Christmas in Calgary and this year is the 10th anniversary of the current choreography by Edmund Stripe. If you’ve never been, here are 5 reasons to start a new family tradition this holiday!

1. Try Something New

Even if you’re a spicy family, more into carving your way down the mountain, Monster Jam, or wrestling through the hallways, there’s something valuable about trying a totally different experience. The music is recognizable and the Christmas setting enchanting. Whether it’s the dressing up and going out together or exposing your kids to a live performance and classical music, The Nutcracker offers a special evening to be together and encounter something new.

2. A Ballet for Children

If you’re not sure how your kids will do with ballet, either because of interest or age, be assured that The Nutcracker is a children’s ballet. Not only does the storyline revolve around children and the magic of Christmas, but there are many kids cast in the ballet, as well, which is fun for kids to see. Of course, there will also be LOTS of kids in the audience, too, so you’ll be in good company. With everything from beautiful tutus to courageous swordfights, there’s plenty to appeal to any child.

3. Interactive Discovery

The Alberta Ballet makes a night at The Nutcracker interactive. If you’re imagining trying to cope with your child’s wiggles all night, while whisper-explaining the storyline, don’t worry! Before the curtain rises, your family can listen to special guests read the story of The Nutcracker and meet the Snow Tsarina and have your picture taken with her in the magical sleigh. Kids can also try on their own magic in Klara’s Closet, transforming into a magical snow princess, an evil mouse, or a brave Nutcracker. These activities are available for an hour and a half before the show begins and then the story comes to life on the stage.

The story is one to which children can relate, right down to a tiff with a sibling. It embodies a child’s delight in the season, as they enter a world where toys come to life and sweets marvellously perform.

5. Family Traditions and Memories

The Nutcracker has something for the whole family. Gorgeous sets and costumes, lovely familiar music, adventure, and beauty will add a touch of wonder to your Christmas season. It’s a glittering night out that will create sweet, festive memories for your family.
