Founded in 1972, Calgary Opera’s Mission is to be the best at connecting people, through the magic of opera, to themselves, to each other, and to the community.
For 44 years, Calgary Opera has made a name for itself as a company that is committed to the development of Canadian talent and the development of new opera works, as well as bringing opera to all ages in the community on a broader scale. They bring opera to younger audiences through school tours in Calgary and northern/southern Alberta. As well, the company’s For Students Only Dress Rehearsals provides thousands of students with hugely discounted tickets not otherwise available.
The upcoming 2019/20 season for the Calgary Opera is as follows.
La Boheme: November 9 – 15, 2019
“Irresistible in its witty, passionate blend of joy and sorrow, La Bohème follows the lives of a group of young artists as they eke out an existence on the bohemian fringes of Paris.”
Christmas at the Opera: December 6 – 8, 2019
From December 6 – 8, 2019, celebrate Christmas at the Opera with a heartwarming one-act family opera about a young boy who meets three kings on their way to bring presents to the baby Jesus and learns that the act of giving is sometimes its own gift. Click title for more info.
Norma: February 1 – 7, 2020
“Featuring powerhouse performances, Norma tells the tragic story of a dangerous love triangle that opens in the midst of impending war between the Druids and the Romans in ancient Gaul. Norma, a powerful Druid high-priestess is driven to the brink of madness when her secret lover – a Roman enemy, threatens to leave her for one of her beautiful, young followers.”
Béatrice et Bénédict: March 25 – 28, 2020
“Both committed to the single life, Béatrice and Bénédict have individually rebuffed the idea of love, most of all with each other. But when a plot to trick them into falling for one another is set in motion – all bets are off. Celebrate the follies of spring with this semi-staged playful and comedic battle of wits inspired by Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.”
Ariadne auf Naxos: April 25 – May 1, 2020
“Visually and musically stunning, this new European design of Ariadne auf Naxos is a feast for the senses. At a dinner party given by the richest man in the country, two rival performing troupes – one, a serious opera company, the other, a group of burlesque performers – are forced to create a mash-up of their polar-opposite productions when the dinner runs late – with hilarious results.”
