Remember the long, lazy days of summer when you were a kid? You know, back before you had to work through the summer, keep the kids entertained, and worry about whether those kids would be ready to head back to school in September? Well, your kids can still enjoy the long, lazy days of summer, but you can also join the Calgary Public Library and the Ultimate Summer Challenge to keep the kids entertained and learning at the same time!
So much of a child’s learning takes place outside of the classroom and summer is the perfect time to explore a variety of interests, try new things, and, of course, keep reading. The Ultimate Summer Challenge at the Library combines it all! Kids can read or be read to and take part in a number of virtual STREAM challenges in the areas of science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and math. The challenges are available online throughout the summer. The Library has also partnered with the TD Summer Reading Club to bring you a printable Challenge Map and virtual reading log this year, so you can easily keep track of your progress.
The Ultimate Summer Challenge runs from June 1 – August 31, 2020, and kids can register anytime throughout the summer with their free Library card (each child must have their own card, but if they don’t have one, they are available for free online). When a child registers, they will automatically be entered to win a grand prize, including one of ten iPads or other great prizes for kids ages 6 – 12, or a personalized book with your child as the main character for kids 0 – 5 years.
If you have kids ages 12 – 17, get them engaged with the Teen Takeover version of the Ultimate Summer Challenge. They can track their reading through the free Library resource, Beanstack, and complete fun, creative challenges to earn digital badges. The more badges earned, the more chances they have to win Indigo gift cards or Chromebooks.
Stay connected over the summer and see what other readers are up to by tagging the Library on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (@calgarylibrary) and use the hashtag #UltimateSummerChallenge to share pictures of what you read or the progress of your Challenge Map.
What will the summer hold? The Ultimate Summer Challenge is perfect for the littlest one who still likes to chew the books you read to them, the middle-schooler who is passionate about graphic novels, or the teen who decides to challenge themselves with War and Peace. Your kids will be more school-ready in the fall by reading, learning, and creating during the Ultimate Summer Challenge. Plus, it’s a ton a fun for the whole family! Register now and get reading!
