The Calgary Stampede kicks off 10 days of western fun from July 6 – 15, 2018. Far more than just a rodeo, the Calgary Stampede offers great shows, live entertainment of all kinds, the midway, a parade, pancake breakfasts, and so much more. Even on a budget, you can still enjoy the Calgary Stampede! Start your Stampede downtown this year with affordable Calgary Stampede fun for the whole family. On July 7 and July 9 – 14, 2018, the fun kicks off at Fluor Rope Square.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? At Fluor Rope Square, every day, from 8:15 – 10:30 am, starts with classic flapjacks and bacon, served fresh and hot off the griddles from the back of the authentic GMC Rangeland Derby Chuckwagons or Fluor Smokies. You might even get to meet one of the drivers!
(On the first day of Stampede fun at Fluor Rope Square, July 7, come back in the evening for movie night in the square! From 6 – 9 pm, enjoy food trucks and live entertainment, with the Travelling Mabels from 6 – 7 pm and The Magnificent Seven western movie that begins at 7 pm. Bring your own chairs!)
Once you’ve filled up after breakfast, stay for the Stampede-style entertainment! Starting daily at 9:30 am, your family will enjoy marching bands, dancers, singers, fiddlers, clowns, face painting, friendly mascots, Calgary Food Trucks, and a High Noon Hootenanny with country music artists. You could also be invited to compete in the Lammles World Championship Hat Stomping Contest, the Fluor Great Western Flapjack Flip, or even be sworn in as an honorary Calgarian. All the entertainment and activities are FREE!
While you’re waiting for breakfast, the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions Committee will be wandering the pancake lines and randomly be giving out FREE tickets to tour downtown Calgary in a horse-drawn, old-time rig. At 9:30 am, ticket holders will be escorted from Fluor Rope Square to the departure point on 9th Avenue and 1st Street SW (EnCana Place across from the Palliser Hotel). The tour leaves at 10 am and takes approximately one hour. (Note: this activity is not suitable for those with mobility restrictions.)
Kick up your heels from 10 am – 12 pm, and join the square dancing on Stephen Avenue between Centre and 1st Street SW! Experience isn’t necessary. With the help of the Fluor Square Dancers, anyone can learn to dance.
Every day at 11:30 (weather permitting), you can celebrate the First Nations Parade, where members of the five tribes of Treaty 7, dressed in traditional regalia, will proudly share their heritage and culture through dance, music, and commentaries. Join them in the Friendship Dance!
Before you head home or to the Stampede grounds for the rest of the day, don’t forget to enter the Fluor Rope Square contest! Enter to win a Stampede experience through the social media contest via Fluor Rope Square’s Facebook page or the website. Take a photo with the Fluor frame at the square and upload it to Instagram with #ropesquare for an additional 5 entries!
