We know it as a classic summer Olympic discipline, but as a kid, I knew it as Track and Field Day, the very best day of the whole school year. To be sure, some of that was the promise of ice cream, but there was something thrilling about multiple events taking place at the same time, the cheering at the races, and challenging yourself at your favourite event. Calgary Track and Field Club (CALTAF) is hosting summer camps this summer to bring the excitement of track and field to athletes between the ages of 7 and 14 years.
The sport of track and field consists of various athletic events usually performed on a running track or in the field associated with it, with highlights like foot races, including hurdles, the jumping disciplines, such as high jump and long jump, and throwing sports, like shot put and discus. (The term athletics often refers to track and field events, but is also used more generally to include cross-country races, road racing and race walking.)
The Calgary Track and Field Club (CALTAF) was founded in 1958, making it one of the oldest and most established track clubs in Alberta. They offer year-round developmental and competitive training programs for athletes of all ages, with top-level coaching, whether you’re just starting out or you’re a serious competitor.
The CALTAF summer camps are designed to introduce young athletes to the sport of track and field in an enjoyable, supportive environment. Kids from ages 7 to 14 years can attend half-day sessions that provide a mix of technical practice, games, and fun summer activities. The camps aim to develop fundamentals of the sport and a general level of fitness that will benefit kids in every part of their life. The focus will be on using age-appropriate progressions through the basics of running, jumping, and throwing, as well as developing speed and agility.
Families can choose from two different weeks of summer camp. Week one will run July 10 – 14, 2023, from 12 – 3 pm at the Glenmore Athletic Park. Week two will be August 14 – 18, 2023, from 12 – 3 pm at Airdrie Genesis Centre. (Note: the end time may be adjusted due to weather conditions or air quality.)
Help your kids enjoy life to the fullest this summer, as they play outside, challenge themselves, and stay active. Calgary Track and Field summer camps are perfect for summer fun! Registration is now open, so sign up soon.
