Do you have young actors who would love to get on stage? Morpheus Theatre has the perfect program! Kids and youth ages 9 – 17 years will thrive in the encouraging and supportive environment of the G&S Theatre School. With singing, acting, and a chance to perform, kids will find their niche. Even if your child is not dreaming of a career on stage, performing can help build confidence, encourage teamwork, and help kids find a place to belong.
Morpheus Theatre exists to provide actors, directors, and crew with education and production experience, especially for those interested in the music of Gilbert and Sullivan. They want to provide everyone with a chance to learn and an opportunity to be a part of a dedicated group of like-minded people while bringing a production to life.
G&S Junior Theatre School
The G&S Junior Theatre School program at Morpheus Theatre is for kids and youth ages 9 – 17 years and is divided into a Junior Class (9 – 12 years) and a Senior Class (13 – 17 years). The program gives kids a chance to refine their acting skills and challenge themselves with the lyrics and patter of a Gibert and Sullivan operetta. Classes run on Saturday mornings, beginning in mid-October. There are no classes on long weekends or over the winter break. The course concludes with a presentation of the show with a full set and costumes at the Pumphouse Theatre in the spring.
This year, the G&S Junior Theatre is presenting The McAdo, with Gibert & Sullivan’s score of The Mikado kept nearly intact but the setting moved to the Scottish moors. It’s the amusing tale of a wandering minstrel, a cowardly executioner, an iron-fisted ruler, and some of the greatest songs in musical theatre!
Students learn the basics of choral singing in this program, practicing tuning, breath management, good diction, proper formation of vowels, facial expression, and posture. Qualified instructors teach musical sight-reading, along with listening skills and singing in harmony. Gilbert and Sullivan is filled with fun, humour, and drama, so it’s a great way for youth to be introduced to classical music. The program encourages teamwork and friendship and is a positive, low-stress environment.
When students begin the program, they work as a group developing basic skills in all performance elements. Kids are assigned a role in the show once the casting and rehearsal phase begins. Role assignments are geared towards each child’s skill level, with consideration of what will benefit their development as a performer.
Your child can realize their full creative potential while being a part of a fun performance and an encouraging environment! It’s a great value program, too, as it runs from October to May for only $400. There are also discounts for multiple members of the same family. It’s time to register your kids for the Morpheus G&S Theatre School — this is the year to shine!
