Find a winter escape in Banff this year. We’re not talking about escaping winter, we’re talking about embracing it! It’s all about the magic of a snowy landscape, the crisp mountain air, and cozy visits by the fireplace. When even the air sparkles, you know it will be an enchanting evening.

While you’re in Banff this winter, be sure to check out Nightrise. The Banff Gondola comes to life with magical moments after the sun sets. This unique experience opened a few years ago, and this is the final season. You’ll see the summit in a whole new light as this experience is created in collaboration with the Stoney Nakoda Nation.

What is Nightrise?

The Nightrise Experience welcomes guests to an evening adventure under a starlit sky. It’s a multimedia experience that begins on the dark ride up Sulphur Mountain on the Banff Gondola.

Vibrant lighting, multimedia effects, video projections, and original soundscapes transform the entire site into an enchanting world, offering an evening of immersive, interactive and educational experiences that will amaze and inspire you. Special programming and installations help families deepen their understanding of Indigenous Peoples.

The journey begins the moment you step into the gondola. With a hush, your gondola begins moving up the mountain, and the glow of lights begins as you begin to hear about the evening. When you arrive, don’t rush. Step out on the patio for a glittering view of Banff and the bracing mountain air. Wander through Diamond Dust and dazzling lights or watch the Northern Lights display. Head to the rooftop patio and roast a marshmallow over a fire before you cozy up in a blanket. Then, take some time to watch Stories from Stoney. Don’t forget to try the bannock, just outside the Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen. Even better, plan a special meal at the restaurant or grab a drink at Sky Bistro.

The Banff Gondola’s collaboration with Stoney Nakoda helps educate and share culture as we share this space. On special nights, you’ll find storytelling, dancing, or drumming, so be sure to check the schedule.

Embracing Winter

To make your visit to Banff a true winter escape, you don’t want to drive home late in the dark and cold! We stayed at the Mount Royal Hotel, a classic in the heart of Banff. A cozy lobby welcomes you, and well-equipped rooms ensure a comfortable stay. But the best part? Ending the day with the Cascade Lounge and a quiet dip in the rooftop hot tubs. The next morning, we stopped for breakfast at Brazen, the on-site restaurant. A grilled cheese Benedict was a delicious way to end a charming weekend in Banff!
