On a sunny June Saturday, I picked up a friend and we left the city, catching up on life as we drove to the hamlet of Rosebud, a little over an hour from Calgary. Tucked into a scenic valley on the Rosebud River, Rosebud Dinner Theatre has established itself in the theatre world as a destination for Calgarians. This thriving theatre offers professional productions paired with a delicious meal. With inspiring shows, many of which are suitable for families, you’ll be engaged and entertained by the magic of Rosebud and this warm-hearted theatre.
The Sound of Music
In the summer of 2023, as they celebrate 50 years of art in the valley, Rosebud Theatre is presenting The Sound of Music, a classic, unforgettable production. Many of us know the story of The Sound of Music (see the synopsis here), as Maria is sent to be a governess to Captain von Trapp’s seven mischievous children under the shadow of the Third Reich.
The Sound of Music cast shines a spotlight on the considerable talent from the Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA). In the 50 years since the first Summer Arts Camp in Rosebud Valley, the Theatre now welcomes thousands of guests annually to see plays on two stages, listen to live music, and enjoy the moments with friends and family.
Rosebud Dinner Theatre
Tickets to Rosebud Dinner Theatre include a delicious buffet meal at the historic Rosebud Mercantile. (While you can purchase show-only tickets, the buffet meal is a fun and relaxing part of the whole experience!) Rosebud’s Mercantile was originally a general store, but now it’s a charming space for the buffet. The many rooms and alcoves make the experience feel cozy and relaxed. Rather than jostling through a busy buffet line, your server will come and invite you to the buffet in a timely fashion. It’s perfect for families with excited, impatient kids.
Anyone who knows The Sound of Music is familiar with the song My Favourite Things. I was charmed to find the buffet menu included ‘crisp apple strudels’ and ‘schnitzel with noodles’! A cozy table, a wonderful buffet, and lingering over coffee and dessert set the scene before we wandered over to the Rosebud Opera House with plenty of time to get settled for the show.
We quickly found our seats in the intimate Opera House and were soon swept away to the Austrian Alps with the von Trapp family and the high-spirited Maria. The accomplished cast of Rosebud Theatre brought this timeless story to life with the accompaniment of two grand pianos on stage. Singing their way through struggles and triumphs, the von Trapp Family offers a message of integrity, perseverance, and resilience.
A Summer Musical for the Whole Family
A special occasion, summer fun, or introducing your kids to live theatre — there are all kinds of reasons to head to Rosebud Theatre this summer! Children must be at least age 4 to visit the theatre, although some 4-year-olds might find the show too long. The Sound of Music is perfect for families with school-age kids or teenagers and kids will love the buffet. Parents will love the opportunity to take some time away from a busy life and savour the moment.
