The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) holds periodic evening open houses and public events. All open house events feature access to an array of telescopes operated by University of Calgary astronomers and members of the Royal Astronomical Society. Each open house kicks off with an observatory check-in and a “What’s Up in the Sky Tonight” talk. You have the opportunity to look through the telescopes and astronomers will be on hand to answer questions.
If the sky is cloudy, they cannot operate the telescopes, so check the website for sky conditions and updates before heading out.
Entrance fee for these evenings is generally $30 per car, with all proceeds towards the observatory’s educational programming. No pre-registration required, just drop in. Remember to dress for the weather and bring a flashlight covered in red cellophane, if you have one.
There are also sometimes Milky Way Nights you can check out.
