July 2015
After spoiling Edmontonians with their fresh mozzerella cheeses, creamy cappuccinos and endless aisles of Italian imports Calgarians finally get our very own Italian Centre Shop. Family owned and operated by the Spinelli family for over 50 years in Edmonton, the family set its sights on Calgary and the import supermarket is now here. The expansive store is bright, cheery and brimming with delicious baked and fresh goods.
More than just a place to pop in to pick up groceries, the cafe-style seating next to the cappuccino bar is the perfect gathering place to catch up with a friend over coffee.
There are entire aisles dedicated to pastas of every shape, size and colour. Who knew black squid ink pasta even existed? Don’t worry, there is still good old classic spaghetti on the shelves too.
The selection was almost overwhelming at first, I never knew there were that many varieties of olives but the helpful staff are eager to make suggestions and offer a sample.
I loved the variety of imported gourmet food but I have to admit, I was secretly pleased there are pesticide-free tomatoes from my favourite local Albertan farmer for sale in the produce aisle too. It is truly a one stop grocery shop. The Italian Centre Shop is open daily from 9:00am – 9:00pm.
