How much do you know about Canadian military medicine? It’s a crucial factor in military history and a fascinating journey through pain and struggle, the sacrificial care of others, and technological advances. This fall and winter, The Military Museums is bringing you a new and fascinating exhibit called Blood, Sweat and Tears: Canadian Military Medicine.

The Military Museums’ award-winning facility is dedicated to representing Canada’s Army, Air Force, and Navy; they aim to educate the public, particularly youth, about Canada’s military. Visiting the Museums offers an opportunity to experience the victories, tragedies, and sacrifices of the men and women of the Canadian Forces. You can walk through a First World War trench, learn about Canada’s only tank unit, and hear the story behind Canada’s victory at Vimy. And now, with a special new exhibit, you can learn all about military medicine.

Blood, Sweat and Tears: Canadian Military Medicine, will be featured in the University of Calgary Founders’ Gallery at The Military Museums from October 20, 2023, to March 3, 2024. This exhibit is a unique opportunity to explore Canadian military medicine from the 19th century to the more recent war in Afghanistan. With over 138,000 wounded in the First World War, and over 53,000 wounded in the Second World War alone, military medicine has been crucial and constantly evolving. The exhibit features battlefield medicine, travelling from the initial first aid through to convalescence. You will also find a major section about PTSD.

Who are the faces of Canadian military medicine? It’s all about the sacrifices and dedication of ordinary people. You’ll learn about the commitments of the men and women who were stretcher bearers, medics, nurses, doctors, surgeons, and other medical personnel who saved countless lives. Hear specific stories of those who have tended to the wounded, including their personal artifacts. The exhibit will be enhanced through art, representing a full chronology through art and artifacts.

Learn something new this fall and winter. Admire the dedication, courage, and commitment of Canadian military medicine and make a plan to visit The Military Museums: Blood, Sweat and Tears.
