Your family can leave your mark on an art project for the new central library. The countdown is on for the grand opening of Saskatoon’s new central Library! To celebrate this transformative community space, the Saskatoon Public Library is planning a Community Lego Build. This new collaborative community project invites residents of all ages to enjoy a hands-on experience building individual LEGO® mosaic tiles to form a stunning community-built art piece titled Where We Grow. Whether you are a seasoned LEGO® builder or new to bricks, this is a wonderful way for your entire family to be part of a project that celebrates our community.
Once the fun events end and the Where We Grow LEGO® project is completed, the mosaic will be installed in the brand-new central library. It reflects on themes of learning, growth and connection to place, and was inspired by prairie plants native to Saskatchewan. The Saskatoon Public Library has collaborated with Wanuskewin Heritage Park in selecting the plants featured in the design, grounding the artwork in local ecology and shared history.
What To Expect
Families and friends will work on their very own small section, and each tile will become part of a much larger piece inspired by the plants that call Saskatchewan home. Once the completed mosaic is in its new home, it will measure over 10 feet wide by 16 feet tall and will be made up of more than 256,000 LEGO pieces.
The Saskatoon Public Library Lego Build Launch
The project kicks off on Saturday, April 18 at the Frances Morrison Central Library. Robin Sather, Canada’s first LEGO Certified Professional, will be at the launch to build alongside Saskatoon residents. Saskatoon Public Library worked closely with Robin to translate the artwork into a LEGO mosaic format.
Build Events Across the City
If you didn’t get tickets for the launch, your family will have a lot of other chances to participate and add to the final art project. Build events will take place at all Saskatoon Public Library locations between April and July, allowing for multiple opportunities for community participation across the city. Make sure to check the full schedule for any changes. It is available at saskatoonlibrary.ca/lego.
