Arts Umbrella, the pre-eminent arts educational facility in British Columbia, believes that an arts education makes a difference in the lives of young people by providing them with the building blocks for life: self-confidence, self-discipline, and creative expression. In 1979, Arts Umbrella opened its doors to 45 children and has only continued to grow in both programming and reach.
This fall, Arts Umbrella’s team of arts educators and staff are excited to lead programs in Art & Design, Dance, and Theatre, Music & Film. Try your hand at Sketch Comedy and Improv, Architecture & Environmental Design, or a Parent and Me Program for early learners. All classes are designed to inspire children and youth from ages 2-22. Plus, Arts Umbrella offers additional programming at its Surrey Centre location so more families can benefit from participating in the transformative Arts Umbrella programs.
Early Learning
Inspiration and planting the seeds of creativity are the focus of classes provided to kids aged 2-6 years! The early years are a key point in a child’s development: a time to investigate problem-solving, nurture curiosity, and develop self-confidence. The programs are designed to encourage discovery in a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment. Early Learning Programs offer both Parent and Me classes as well as classes just for young learners. Dance
Through Arts Umbrella’s holistic integrative approach, young dancers achieve their full potential. At the Lindsay Mearns School of Dance, graduates go on to perform with some of the world’s most prestigious companies, and the students are recognized in the field for their professionalism and integrity. Arts Umbrella offers exceptional, foundational training in classical ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary dance. Senior dancers are provided opportunities to perform world-class choreography and receive instruction from international guest artists. The rigorous and supportive curriculum balances physical development with emotional and intellectual growth, providing a life-changing dance education. Theatre, Music & Film
Arts Umbrella’s Robert M. Ledingham School of Theatre, Music & Film programs have young performers getting hands-on with costumes, improv, script work, character studies, and theatrical performances. Working theatre, film, and television artists guide students through collaborative and solo theatre exercises to teach timing, memorization, melody, harmony, and bodily self-awareness. Students also get exposure to the technical aspects of theatre through the Stagecraft program, learning lighting, sound, costumes, and makeup design. Art & Design
In the Audain School of Art & Design, young artists learn that art may take many forms, through sculpture, animation, painting, model-making, photography, environmental design, and more. The artist-instructors bring professional-level instruction to the studio and students work with high-quality materials in every class. Beyond general programming, Arts Umbrella also offers advanced classes, scholarship programs, and portfolio-building and exhibiting opportunities.
