Do your kids have an insatiable desire to have their favourite stories read out loud? Or maybe you just need an excuse to get out of the house! Throughout the year, you’ll find a variety of places around Calgary that do storytime for kids, so you can catch a break. Some places are free, while others have a fee. Please note that some of these storytime events are seasonal or sporadic.
When your voice gives out, here’s where to find a storytime event in Calgary!
Calgary Public Library
Calgary Public Library branches host frequent drop-in Family Storytimes. Everyone is welcome; no registration is required. These times are geared towards kids aged 2 – 5. Drop in for stories, songs and fingerplays your young family will enjoy. Sometimes you’ll even find Firefighter Storytime!
Heritage Park Storytime
Bring the kids to Heritage Park and visit a variety of locations in the park for story time! Volunteers will read familiar classics and modern favourites, and kids will enjoy a take-home craft. Gasoline Alley rates apply. This storytime normally takes place from January to April on Wednesday mornings.
Indigo Kids Storytime
From time to time, IndigoKids departments in Chapters and Indigo stores host events for kids and their parents/caregivers. These events could be anything from storytime to crafts and more. Find out what’s coming up.
Little Red Reading House
Calgary Reads strives to create a vibrant reading community for Calgary’s children, and you can book a visit to the Little Red Reading House from Wednesdays to Saturdays (some exceptions apply). You can spend your time at this magical, literacy-rich house any way you like! Children can find a cozy nook to curl up in and read independently or enjoy a story read aloud by their adult. It’s a place of discovery, with themed rooms and special reading places. At the end of your visit, each child can choose a free book to take home and keep. Book a visit for $20 per family. Visits are 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Mastermind Toys Storytime
Mastermind Toys has traditionally hosted free storytimes on Thursday afternoons at 4 PM. We haven’t seen these events lately, but check with your local store.
YouthLink Calgary Police Story Hour
A Calgary Police Service uniformed officer will read a story during Police Story Hour at the YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre. There will also be a craft that matches the theme of the book to do at the Centre or to take home. This program is best suited for ages 8 and under, and admission is by donation. Make sure to register for your spot.
