Canada knows ice.

Look at a hockey or ringette player, with quick turns and fantastic speed, or a figure skater, with athletic jumps and artistic lines, and you’ll see they all have one thing in common: excellent ice skating skills. And if they are from Canada, there’s a good chance they started learning those skating skills in a Skate Canada CanSkate program! Whether your child wants to play hockey, figure skate, or just have fun with their friends on the ice, their journey starts at the Golden Edge Skating Academy.

As a Canadian kid, there’s nothing quite like grabbing your skates and heading to the rink or an outdoor pond with your family and friends. Golden Edge Skating Academy is a Skate Canada sanctioned school that offers children ages 3 and up an opportunity to learn and improve their skating skills. It doesn’t matter whether your child is more interested in strengthening their slapshot or perfecting their double salchow, the Skate Canada programs at Golden Edge, taught by certified, professional coaches, help kids embrace the joy of skating at every level, so kids can achieve their goals in a fun, safe, and friendly environment.

The Pre-CanSkate and CanSkate program is for beginner skaters of all ages, as it focuses on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to enjoy any ice sport. These skills will enhance your child’s experience on the ice and give them the ability to move on to hockey, ringette, figure skating, or speed skating if they desire. Children can start in Pre-CanSkate when they are as young as three, even if they have never stepped onto the ice before. CanSkate is for kids who can move forward unassisted and complete a lap around the ice with relative speed. In CanSkate, there are six stages of balance, control, and agility skills that skaters will follow, giving kids clear goals and the satisfaction of accomplishment as they move through the levels.

The Golden Edge Skating Academy offers spring lessons that run from April to June for all CanSkate levels. You can find lessons at the Hockey Hub (10 Stonehill Pl NE #150), Trico Centre (11150 Bonaventure Dr SE), and the Don Hartman North East Sportsplex (5206 68 St NE). All you need to get started are skates and a CSA-approved hockey helmet, and of course, long pants, mittens, and a warm sweater or jacket.

Of course, if your child has already mastered the basics and wants to keep going, Golden Edge also offers the Skate Canada STARSkate and competitive skate program. This program offers skaters a chance to develop their figure skating expertise in the areas of dance, skating skills, free skate, and artistic skating. You can find more about moving on here.
