Sundre, Alberta is located just a 75-minute drive from Calgary – northwest along the Cowboy Trail – in Alberta’s Mountain View County. The area features lots of outdoor recreation opportunities, in-town attractions, special events and that friendly Albertan hospitality.
Here’s where your family can find fun, adventure and a home away from home in Sundre!
In the Great Outdoors
Whether you’re into RV-ing, renting a cabin, tent-and-cooler camping straight from the car or are looking for a genuine wilderness adventure, Sundre has the right location for your family’s camping holiday. What will be your new favourite campground? Tall Timber Leisure Park, with its indoor pool, snack bar and two large new playgrounds, is very popular with RV, trailer and 5th-wheel families!
The beautiful Red Deer River runs right through Sundre and features Class-3 Rapids that make for a fantastic family adventure! Otter Rafting Adventures runs half-day and full-day rafting and inflatable kayak trips every day between May 15th and September 15th, for guests 50 pounds and up. Complete a short online survey for the chance to Win an Otter Rafting Adventure for 4!
Like your outdoors green and groomed? Then you’ll want to know that Sundre is home to one of Canada’s best 18-hole courses, at the Sundre Golf Club. They have the option to do just 9 holes and offer discounts for Juniors (18 & under) and afternoon and twilight tee times. Non-golfers can ride along for a nominal fee too!
Now here’s something we city slickers don’t see every day… the foothills and mountain areas just west of Sundre are home to some of Alberta’s famed herds of wild horses. If you’re lucky enough to catch a view of these natural beauties, you won’t soon forget the experience. And you’ll get a particularly great view from the back of your own horse, when you sign up for a trail ride with Sunset Guiding & Outfitting! This family-owned business provides gentle, well broke horses (suitable for all ages and ability) for horseback excursions in the Sundre area, including their private Panther River Retreat. Whether you have 2 hours or a full day (or even want to set up a multi-day retreat for a group), Sunset Guiding will provide a relaxing western excursion and superb hospitality in this spectacular natural area.
Right In Town
Like so much of Alberta, Sundre boasts a fascinating natural & human history, which is on display at the Sundre Museum. Along with learning more about how modern Sundre came to be, kids will love the 4-acre Pioneer Village and the Chester Mjolsness World of Wildlife, featuring 150 taxidermy birds and animals from around the world, including an elephant and a giraffe!
If you plan to visit Sundre, but camping’s not your style, check out the great accommodations at the new BEST WESTERN PLUS Mountainview Inn & Suites and at Rustlers Lodge. Both feature a warm welcome, complimentary hot breakfast, indoor swimming pool and accommodation-attraction packages that can have you exploring the area for less.
Oh, and where to chow down? When in Sundre, don’t miss a visit to Kodiak BBQ Deli. Owners Tom Jackson and Kevin Hunter make “BBQ food that dances on your senses and gets your lips rejoicing”. Oh, Kodiak, you had me at “BBQ”. Even if you’re camping, give the Coleman stove some time off and grab take-out!
At a Special Event
Whether you like to watch the action or be part of it, one of Sundre’s special events is sure to appeal to you.
The Sundre Pro Rodeo (June 23-25, 2017) is 3 days of cowboy-style fun, including a good ol’ country parade, big-name rodeo competitors, bulls & wagons, a pancake breakfast, the all-important midway & concessions, and loads of live entertainment. There’s even free RV parking, so why not hitch up your home away from home and get a head start on Stampede season??
This year, add Sundre to your family’s road trip bucket list!
