Once again Theatre Under the Stars has put on a terrific performance.  This year’s production of Shrek was delightful!  Despite it being a late night for our 3 & 5 year olds, they sat on the edges of their seats for the entire 2.5 hour performance.

Having seen other performances of Shrek, the musical, I was a bit worried that some of the content might be a tad mature for my boys’ ears.  A big thank you to TUTS for remembering that families enjoy bringing their children and that not every adult joke goes over kids’ heads.

The performers were terrific.  Shrek and Fiona are outstanding.  I was also a big fan of the dragon (played by Sharon Ong); man, does she have a set of pipes on her! I really liked Lindsay Warnock’s interpretation of Fiona’s character; she seemed to embrace more of the ogre side of her character rather than the princess.  The story made more sense with that interpretation.

Shrek (played by Matt Palmer) is an absolute delight.  His voice is wonderful; his acting is spot-on.  The donkey (played by Ken Overbey) and Shrek played well off of each other.

Special recognition needs to be given to the massive cast.  Their performance of “Let Your Freak Flag Fly” was wonderful.  The audience was bouncing around in their seats and clapping their hands with gusto.

Shrek, the Musical plays at Malkin Bowl until August 30th.  Theatre Under the Stars alternates Shrek with Legally Blonde.  While next year’s shows haven’t been announced be sure to mark your calendars.  Attending one, or both, of the musicals produced by Theatre Under the Stars should be a part of everyone’s bucket list for the summer!
