Book lovers know that the world of Dr. Seuss often includes spirals, twists and turns, and bright colours. And that’s just what you’ll find at the newest Coquitlam playground- Sheffield Park.

Located on Burke Mountain, an increasingly popular neighbourhood for families, Sheffield Park is the latest in a string of exciting new playgrounds and park spaces to open in the last few years. Built into the side of a mountain and with great views, this park will remind playground aficionados (and their children!) of other local spots such as Queenston Park and Riley Park, but Sheffield Park offers more amenities that families will love.

Sheffield Park in Coquitlam

The bright aesthetics, coupled with exceptional areas for play made our sunny morning trip a glorious one. My kids, 2 and 4, loved running up and down the hill and climbing the stairs that led from the lower area to the giant metal slide. Metal slides can be tricky, as they can heat up in the summer and become race tracks in rainy weather, but this one is covered which ensures year-round enjoyment! The climbing system up to the slide was a huge hit with my daughter, as it required climbing and problem-solving to navigate the rope system. In addition to the slide, there are a couple of spinning pieces and a swing, but the real draw of this park is the large sandbox located at the bottom of the play structures.Sheffield Park Sandbox

Featuring a water play system, slide into the sand, covered tunnel area, and two digging toys, the sandbox here was unlike any other feature locally. My kids played here for a good 2 hours, then ran up and down the hill to and from the slide. Let me tell you, they were exhausted by the time we left! With a basketball court and skate park/bike spot at the bottom of the park, kids of all ages can find an activity at Sheffield Park. There is also a spray pad, but it is turned off presently so we didn’t have a chance to try it out. Picnic tables, huge grassy areas to play or rest, chairs, benches, and washroom facilities ensure that this park will be well-used not only during the nice summer months but year-round as my kids get older.

This playground is best suited to ages 3 and over due to the steep hills and tall climbing equipment.
