Every kid – big and small, at some point, has wanted to ride a train! Did you know that Heritage Park is one of only a few places in North America with two steam engines and they dedicate an entire weekend just for their collection of historical rolling stock trains? Stop by Railway Days on September 23 & 24th to see the trains in action!
Railway Days offers your family all the excitement and fun you’ve come to expect from Heritage Park, plus a wide variety of unique activities that will fascinate the rail enthusiasts, as the trains take centre stage. See demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities, and visit the rail club displays! You can also see the unveiling and inaugural start-up of the recently restored Canadian Pacific Railway wrecking crane, the only working steam-powered 100-ton mountain-type railway crane in Canada!
If your kids have ever asked about the train turntable, this weekend they can watch the original 1907 turntable in motion. There will be hand and whistle signal presentations, they can watch the steam engine take on water from a 1902-model tower and enjoy caboose rides. (Caboose rides need to be pre-purchased. Call 403-268-8500 to purchase.)
If that doesn’t peak your interest, there will also be demonstrations of all Heritage Park’s steam equipment – the Case 65 steam engine, the Steam Roller and the supply stationary steam engine.
Imagine how royalty, immigrants, or rail tycoons travelled as you tour some of the rarest rail cars in Canada, and find out how they used to keep the train going through snowed-in mountain passes.
Also, back for this year, is the chance to send a real telegram! If your kids can even imagine a time before email and cell phones, introduce them to a time when the telegram was modern technology and a vital communication tool. Send a telegraph from one rail station, pick it up at another, and keep the free souvenir!
While you tour the park, join the Kids’ Railway Challenge. Try four rail activities, collect four stamps and enter to win a prize pack, including a Heritage Park ‘Family & Friends’ Annual Pass. Or, enter the free draw to win Engineer for a Day and a ride for you and a guest in Heritage Park’s historical steam locomotive! This amazing prize will allow you to get behind the scenes as you don crew uniforms, join the crew to prepare the train for the day, ride in the steam locomotive cab and much more.
So, plan on coming aboard for Railway Days and all the best that Heritage Park has to offer!
