How is your summer going? I hope you’ve found the right balance between keeping busy and having enough downtime to feel relaxed. (I know, I know. With kids in the house, that’s usually just a lofty goal.) August in Calgary has loads of festivals, fairs, music, and great family events. Check out our posts on Summer Festivals and 100 Things to do This Summer, too. Throw in a few visits to our great Calgary attractions and the local pools and parks and you should find lots to keep your family busy. (Maybe we can relax later. Just let me dream.)
Check out Guardians of the Wild at the Calgary Zoo. The Zoo has established Action Stations where you can learn how the little things you do can positively impact the animals you love. Plus, enter to win prizes, like a trip for 2 to China to visit the pandas!
The drive-in may be basically a thing of the past, but you can still enjoy outdoor movies! Spruce Meadows is running Movies at the Meadows every Wednesday this month. Check the movie schedule and don’t forget the bug spray!
The Alberta Kennel Club is hosting their Summer Classic Dog Show, also at Spruce Meadows, over the August long weekend. This event is for anyone and everyone who loves dogs – or wants to learn more about them! Find out more about dog sports and responsible dog ownership and see some amazing breeds of all types of dogs strutting their stuff to claim the top prizes.
The wild, the wacky, and the wonderful all show up to the Calgary Fringe Festival from August 3 – 11. There are lots of kid-friendly and family options, including, Terms and Conditions, which blends acrobatics and slapstick comedy.
Maybe laser tag is more your style? Laser City is offering laser tag games for only $5 from Tuesday to Thursday this summer. Bring some ZAP to your day!
Fill a weekend with great music in a family-friendly environment when the No Greater Love Festival comes to Cochrane, August 11-12. Besides the music, however, there are lots of other fun things to do: food trucks, a vendor alley, a First Nations Village, a skateboard park, and a kids’ zone. You can even make a weekend of it and camp onsite.
All those delicious little things are waiting for you at a Taste of Calgary from August 9 – 12. Buy sampling tickets for $1 each and use them to sample any of the food or beverage menu items. While enjoying the delicious options, visit a variety of artisans, entrepreneurs, and interactive activities to add to the fun of the festival.
From August 16 – 25, appreciate the explosive Globalfest, with its amazing fireworks and cultural opportunities. Enjoy food vendors, a kids’ village, and of course, the fireworks. Taking place over 5 nights, the entertainment will be outstanding every time. The schedule is August 16th (Ukraine), 18th (Spain), 21st (Philippines), 23rd (China), and 25th (Canada), 2018.
From August 25 – 26, you can take your city kids to the Country Kickback at Heritage Park. This hands-on event offers a multitude of country-living activities and demonstrations from threshing and baling with steam-powered machinery to making intricate lace and rugs by hand. Don’t forget to visit the petting zoo!
Beat the heat with a Cineplex Family Favourites movie. Only $2.99 (leaving you a budget for extra popcorn, maybe?), they’re playing on Saturdays and Wednesdays in the summer.
