A day spent outside on the farm is good for the soul, and Butterfield Acres is Calgary’s home for fun on the farm. Right on the NW edge of the city, it’s easy to bring your city kids to experience a taste of farm animal life from spring to fall. You can visit the animals every day from April to September for fresh air and family fun, or even have the animals come to you.
There’s so much to do at Butterfield Acres, especially if your children love animals. Come for a visit with the goats, sheep, or bunnies. Take a pony ride and listen to what a donkey’s hee-haw really sounds like. In the spring you can adore the babies, with sweet little chicks and piglets. Don’t forget to feed the critters with some cones from the Chop ‘n Cones barn and hunt for freshly laid eggs. You can even try goat milking! Many of the animals can be visited right in their pens, or through the fence for the larger ones. Learning about the animals through the seasons can offer valuable lessons for kids, from love and respect to interesting facts. Make it easy and affordable to visit often by purchasing a season’s pass!
Butterfield Acres also has a number of special events throughout the season and special opportunities on the farm.
In the spring, you’ll want to head to the adorable Barnyard Baby Days, where the farm celebrates new life. Take a picture with all the new babies, like lambs, piglets, chicks, and lots more. On Easter weekend, you can also visit the Easter Bunny while you’re there. When fall comes, plan on the Harvest Pumpkin Hunt, where you can ride the tractor-pulled hay wagon to find the perfect pumpkin. With animal visits, fall photo opportunities, and a ride thru Scarecrow Alley in the back woodlands, you have the perfect fall family day. In between, try a summer camp or book a birthday party (at the farm or at your place!). Sometimes, the farm also hosts Date Night, so Mom and Dad can head to the farm for an adult night!
Make a day of it on your next visit to Butterfield Acres. Pack a picnic and enjoy the fresh air. You can even book a fire pit for a hot dog roast! Besides animals, enjoy the tractor rides and the farmyard activity stations. There are on-site washrooms with handwashing stations, free parking, and a snack concession. There is wheelchair and stroller access to most areas with assistance, but please note that the pathways are not paved and the terrain is slightly hilly. Be sure to plan ahead for any daily activities your family would enjoy and remember that Butterfield Acres is a working farm that changes with the seasons.
Butterfield Acres is closed in the winter, but if you’re missing the farm animals, they can come to you for your special event! You don’t need a reason to bring the farm to you, but many people have celebrated things like birthday parties, winter carnivals, and other special events. Bring a petting zoo to your backyard or enjoy pony (and unicorn!) rides. You could plan a live nativity or a pony grooming session. There are so many possibilities! You only need to contact the farm to make any event memorable.
No matter the season, Butterfield Acres brings farm fun to city kids. Expand your children’s horizons beyond the city sidewalks and discover life on the farm.
Visits to the farm and the animals’ visits to you operate under whatever regulations are in place at the time of the visit.
