Ah, Valentine’s Day, when the thoughts of parents turn to leaving their kids at home with a babysitter and going out for an evening that doesn’t involve sippy cups and colouring sheets. I don’t know about you, but when I had young kids, I was even happy to grab a coffee at Tim Hortons, as long as it was sans kids. It meant I didn’t have to share my doughnut.
In honour of Valentine’s Day this month, we’ve come up with a few date night ideas that go beyond dinner and a movie, or, you know, beyond a double-double. Grab your sweetheart or a friend, and plan a memorable night out. (Some of these ideas would even work for a special date night with one of your mini-sweethearts.)
Dinner and a movie are a tried-and-true date night idea, but sometimes it’s fun to tweak it a little.
Have some good clean fun with laugh out loud comedy and an improv game show at Date Night Comedy on February 7.
Vertigo Theatre is presenting Deathtrap this month, and what says romance more than a live theatre, spine-chilling thriller?
If you just love movies, why mess with a good thing? Add some nostalgia to February with the Cineplex Flashback Film Series or indulge in Chocolat, playing at the Grand right on Valentine’s Day. (And admission to the Grand includes a sweet treat and a glass of bubbly!)
Use your little grey cells at Fort Calgary’s Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre: Death by Chocolate, with fabulous food and entertainment that will have you laughing all Valentine’s night.
The Calgary Jazz Orchestra will add some love to your evening with The Art of Romance/The Art of Soul on February 10. It’s an evening of musical romance! (Unless you’re not with your love, then it’s an evening of great jazz music.)
For something in the more classical vein, the Calgary Civic Orchestra is presenting Immortal Beloved. Also on February 10, you’ll enjoy these love-themed pieces.
Can’t decide what kind of music? On February 16, the Clicquot Trio is presenting Latin and Love Songs, music that fuses classical music with jazz elements.
Add Some Culture
Studio Bell has a deal that combines music and culture! On February 12, Studio Bell has reduced admission! Whether it’s mom and dad or a night out with the fam, admission is only $10.
If you’re looking for something a little more budget-friendly, you can find it at the Glenbow Museum on February 7. From 5 to 9 pm, you can explore the museum for FREE! This is perfect for date night, or a special night out with your kids.
Can we consider Winefest Calgary a cultural event? Why not?! Leave the kids behind and sample from hundreds of local and international red, white, port, sparkling, and dessert wines while indulging in a gourmet selection of complimentary hors-d’oeuvres.
Stay Busy & Engaged With Activities
Calgary Farmers Market has 4X the love on Valentine’s Day with special events, including wine sampling. You can bring your kids; there are doughnuts, too! This event has the advantage of being during the day so you can still get to bed on time. (That would be my tired Mommy voice sneaking out.) Or you can purchase tickets for Valentine’s evening with Market Wines at the Calgary Farmers Market.
Plan a crafty date night with Pinnovate DIY Studios. The options of what you can create are limited only by your imagination, and you might be surprised how much fun you have. (That applies to kids, guys, and even ladies like me who say they don’t like crafting . . . ) Plus, you can enjoy food, wine, and coffee onsite.
What about trying to escape from a locked room? With all kinds of themes and locations around town, this is fun for a couple or the whole family! Hopefully, it doesn’t expose any deep-seated relationship issues, like ballroom dance did for me. But I digress.
Whether you need a romantic night out, some laughs with friends, or want to create a special date for your kids, we wish you a happy Valentine’s Day and season! Even if you have to share your doughnuts.
