They don’t make things like they used to – unless you are talking about Pie Junkie Bakery and Cafe’s sweet and savoury pies.
Using family recipes spanning four generations and pairing her British father’s pastry skills and Italian mother’s culinary genius – Nancy, the owner, launched Pie Junkie to share her family’s fabulous pies.
I went the grand opening celebration of their new Kensington location to taste slivers of at least 15 of Pie Junkie’s samplings. I can’t think of when I’ve eaten a better piece of pie (sorry, mom).
The flakey, buttery crusts with caramelized bits of goodness are to die for, not to mention the high-quality, locally-sourced sustainable beef, berries and other goodies used in their fillings.
When quizzing the other foodies between bites to pick their favourite selection, everyone had troubles narrowing it down to three. They were all that good.
My favourite savoury ones were the Three Cheese and Onion Hand Pie and the Brie and Chutney Galette.
If I had to narrow down to one favourite sweet pie, I’d go with the Salted Honey Pie – it was a custard crossed with creme brulee. My husband’s favourite was the Sour Cherry Pie.
If you are in a multi-cultural mood, you’ll want to check out their traditional Aussie Beef, Butter Chicken or the Jamaican Hand Pie.
