Bring on the drama this summer — really! If you have a young dramatist in your house, introduce them to the drama basics with summer camps from Pumphouse Theatre. These camps offer a variety of skills for any child. It’s all about learning how to communicate and express yourself, developing confidence and poise, and learning how to think outside the box. It’s imagination, self-discipline, and critical thinking skills. And at Pumphouse Theatre, it’s also about enjoying the arts, making new friends, and having loads of fun. The theme of the Pumphouse Theatre summer camps this year is LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
Pumphouse Theatre was started in the early 1970s to help fill a theatre void in Calgary at that time and to provide Calgarians with an affordable place to enjoy creative arts. Beyond theatre productions, they also provide a drama education program, such as their summer drama day camps.
Summer camps at Pumphouse Theatre are offered in 5-day or 9-day options for kids ages 7 – 15 years. Participants gain confidence through this introduction to the dramatic arts, while they have fun with like-minded kids. Each camp is divided into classes that cover a variety of acting techniques, speech, physical theatre play creation, and more. Kids will work together under professional instructors, developing social and life skills. With their age group, they will create a play and at the end of each session, you’ll get to watch them perform their creation and showcase their new talents! Final performances are on the second Thursday of the 9-day sessions, and on the Friday of the 5-day sessions.
The 5-day summer camp sessions are available for kids ages 7 – 15. They focus on theatre fundamentals and are perfect for anyone checking out drama camp for the first time or for anyone who wants a one-week camp. The 9-day sessions are for kids ages 10 – 15 and are designed for campers with some experience, beginning with the fundamentals and building towards more advanced technique exploration.
Registration is now open, but there is limited availability, so don’t delay! Early bird registrations (before May 15, 2023) and multiple registrations per family will receive a $50 discount. The camps run from 9 am – 4:30 pm, but pre- and post-care are included in registration, beginning at 8 am and ending at 5:30 pm.
