Calgary International Children's Festival (Family Fun Calgary)

The Calgary International Children’s Festival is back again this spring, bringing the best in performing arts for young audiences to Calgary, May 23-26, 2018. Join the excitement with imaginative puppet shows, innovative tales told through black light, GRAMMY Award-winning musicians, and enchanting storytelling.

You may have a shiver go up your spine or be laughing out loud in your seat; either way, you’ll surely enjoy the amazing learning moments and experience that this unique festival offers.

Our top picks for shows at the 2018 Calgary International Children’s Festival include:

Doktor Kaboom! It’s Just Rocket Science

Science is amazing – and hilarious! The (slightly) mad, scientifically ingenious Doktor Kaboom is back by popular demand for more wacky science . . . Kaboom style! Learn about the physics of space exploration with a hearty dose of laughs, audience participation, and a DIY hovercraft! You won’t want to miss Doktor Kaboom!

The Bookbinder

Tumble through pages of wonder and adventure in a story of mystery, magic, and mayhem for curious children and adventurous adults . . . the award-winning company Trick of the Light Theatre weaves storytelling, shadow play, and puppetry together to tell the enthralling and sometimes eerie tale of The Bookbinder.

The Rainbow Fish

Using innovative puppetry and black light effects, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has made an international name for itself with visually entrancing productions that bring children’s classics to life. Their brand new adaptation of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister inspires audiences across the nation with an award-winning story exploring beauty, cooperation, and generosity.

The Friday evening performances of the Rainbow Fish and the Bookbinder will feature a pyjama party theme! All guests, big and small, are encouraged to bring their favourite stuffed toy friends and to wear their pyjamas!

Free Fun at Olympic Plaza

After enjoying one of the critically-acclaimed performances, join Kidsfest for a full day of fun with a wide range of free activities and entertainment on Olympic Plaza (adjacent to Arts Commons). There will be storytelling, dance workshops, roving artists, magicians, face painting, games, and more. All this free outdoor fun will take place Wednesday & Thursday 9:30 am – 3 pm, Friday 9:30 am – 6 pm, and Saturday from 10 am – 6 pm.
