There is so much I love about December and Christmas that I can even tolerate winter. The nights are long, but the Christmas lights lift my spirits! There are lots of great activities in Calgary, so get your Christmas shopping done (and make it easy with Breakaway Experiences!) and keep reading for our top picks on family fun.
It’s Christmas. And we have the guides you need. Fun, Christmas activities will be found on Your Ultimate Guide to Christmas Events in Calgary. Want to do a little shopping without hitting the mall? Take a look at our Christmas Market Guide. If you want to find the best places to see the beautiful Christmas Lights, we have that, too! You can also find out where Santa Claus is going to be in the malls, with our Santa Sighting Guide.
Every weekend until Christmas, Heritage Park hosts Once Upon a Christmas, where you can revel in an old-fashioned Yuletide. Enjoy winter wagon rides, crafts, and a visit with Santa. You’ll be amazed by the train display in the Snooker Hall and enjoy a Christmas play in the Opera House.
If you can’t get enough of the old-fashioned Christmas, the Lougheed House is celebrating a Victorian Christmas, every weekend in December. You can also enjoy an intimate Breakfast With Santa the first weekend of December.
Banff Gondola is celebrating A Mountaintop Christmas every weekend in December. There are lots of great activities and it’s all included with your gondola ticket. Santa will even be there until Christmas. Best part? Kids go free before noon!
From Christmas to Hanukah, everyone is invited to the Community Menorah Lighting on December 3.
On December 7 – 8, head over to WinSport for the Viessmann Luge World Cup and Lugeapalooza. You can watch the fastest athletes on ice and enjoy some Christmas activities.
Until December 24 (days and times vary), you can be whisked away on THE POLAR EXPRESS™. Once onboard, hot chocolate and treats are served as passengers read along with the classic children’s book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg, and are entertained by characters from the movie. Of course, Santa is waiting at the North Pole.
Families with older kids will love A Christmas Carol, the classic story of family, generosity, and Christmas cheer. It’s playing until December 23. Or go for a show that’s not quite so traditional, like Jubilations Jr. Dinner Theatre‘s Star Warz: The Elf Strikes Back, playing on Saturdays all December.
From theatre to dance, Calgary has two opportunities to see The Nutcracker, another Christmas classic. Jeunessse Classique Ballet is performing from December 7 to 9 and Alberta Ballet is performing from December 14 – 16 and 20 – 24.
From December 19 – 24, visit the Calgary Nativity Pageant, for a live reenactment of the Christmas story.
For something completely different, floatables are back in the pool at Repsol Sport Centre on December 30. Climb, play, and bounce while you swim!
From December 27 – 31 and January 2 – 6, visit Heritage Park’s Winter CARnival. It’s a great excuse to get out of the house and have a little fun.

Times have changed, and so has gift giving. In our digital era, more and more people are avoiding the crowds and hassles at the mall and buying their gifts online. People are also turning away from a consumerism that values the acquisition of stuff and are favouring the importance and desirability of experiences, building memories with people they love. We’re realizing that the things you collect rarely bring you as much pleasure as time well spent. This Christmas, Breakaway Experiences offers an alternative to traditional gifting, with over 1000 unique,”once-in-a-lifetime,” and “bucket list” experiences. With events like spa days, gourmet food tours, helicopter flights, or mermaid lessons, you don’t have to buy another sweater or gadget that will be thrown to the back of a closest in January. Find a speciality experience that will give someone the chance to relax, discover, have an adventure, and most importantly, create incredible memories that they’ll always cherish. Last-minute? No trouble! It’s easy for you, too: order online, print (or email) the certificate, and your shopping is done. Worried they might not love the experience you chose? Breakaway Experiences also offers hassle-free exchanges or gift certificates, so they can pick their own experience. Gift certificates never expire, either, so your loved one can work around a busy schedule. The hardest part is simply choosing what amazing thing to do.
Although we do our best to provide you with accurate information, all event details are subject to change. Please contact the facility to avoid disappointment.
