Summer has now arrived and events and activities around Calgary are really starting to gear up! We have some “old favourites” of things to do plus some totally new and unique things to try too.
It’s the first weekend of summer, and Calgary’s own Sikome Lake is opening on June 24th! Sikome Lake is a wonderful place to get some of that beachy fun for your family, without having to go anywhere. Sand and water and sun: make the most of this summer!
Don’t forget that the City of Calgary has launched its new season of Mobile Adventure Playgrounds for the summer, which will be rotating around several Calgary parks throughout the summer! These encourage free and creative play, so watch out for them!
And Bow Habitat Station has also launched its Learn to Fish clinics for the summer. Come out on Saturdays to learn a new hobby and find out everything you need to know to get started! They even provide all the equipment!
Weaselhead Natural Area is hosting a Bioblitz this weekend. (Kids must be 10 and up and accompanied by an adult.) A BioBlitz brings together expert naturalists, scientists and citizens to inventory as many plant and animal species as they can in one day. There will also be a community biodiversity fair for all ages.
Do you have family in town? This weekend is Grandparents weekend at Calaway Park! Grandma and/or Grandpa receive 50% off their admission when accompanied by a grandchild to Calaway Park and children under two years old get in for free.
Walk, Wheel, or Run, the Rotary/Mattamy Summer Challenge kicks off on Sunday afternoon at South Glenmore Park! The Rotary/Mattamy Greenway project is the longest urban pathway and park system in the world. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada, all Calgarians are invited to explore 150 kilometers on the Greenway! You can walk, cycle, scoot, skip, rollerblade or run – but the point is to just get out and explore our wonderful city.
If you’re looking for some classic lawn chair theatre, check out The Princess and the Pea, playing at Drake Park in Okotoks. Cost is pay-what-you-can, and the play is a “remix,” which will delight the whole family. Maybe you’re hoping for something a little more sophisticated? If so, check out Shakespeare by the Bow, currently running As You Like It at Prince’s Island Park.
If you prefer more indoor activities, this weekend has you covered as well.
Head up to Bass Pro Shops for their Family Summer Camp. They’re offering workshops, crafts, and free activities. And who doesn’t love giant, stuffed animals?
You could participate in the Brick for Kidz drop-off program on Sunday afternoon, where kids can play, build, and create with Lego. Great fun for the kids, and maybe a little quiet time for the parents?!
Looking for something completely different? The Regal Cat Cafe is opening on June 24th is Kensington. Get your coffee and treats on one side of the cafe and watch the cats frolic on the other side. For a nominal fee, you can join the kitties and play, too!
And if you are exhausted from all the fun jam-packed into this weekend, maybe some quiet time sounds good? Come to Good Earth on Sunday afternoon for some family colouring time! Relax with a beverage and unwind….ahhhh!
This is just a small sample of what is happening this weekend! You can always find everything (by date/time) that is happening this weekend – and the entire month – on our Calendar!
Have a great weekend, everyone!
