The latest Disney Pixar production, Brave, opens in theatres today.
This is the Disney princess movie you have all been waiting for. It’s a story of an independent and tenacious young woman fighting for her right to define her own destiny.
The story is less about the relationship between a princess and her prince and more about the relationship between a mother and her spunky daughter. If you have ever been a teenage girl or if you are a parent to a teenage girl, you will be able to relate to the story of Merida in Brave.
Merida, the heroine of the story, lives in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland with her parents and three younger triplet brothers. She has been groomed her entire life for royal responsibility, etiquette and propriety. None of these things come naturally for fiery and free-spirited Merida. She defies an age-old custom and refuses to choose a husband from the motley crew of dim-witted princes to save the kingdom.
Merida takes matters into her own hands and seeks assistance from a friendly, albeit crack-pot, witch to help with her plight.
I won’t tell you what happens next because I don’t want to spoil the movie for you. You’ll just have to go and see it for yourself!
My son loved the action, adventure and, oh my, the archery. He has decided he wants to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow like Merida and go to Scotland for his birthday.
