Sure, spring is a capricious mistress in Calgary. But April always sounds hopeful, right?! It’s easier to head to the playground when you don’t have to bundle up so much. Sidewalks are ready for biking and it’s time to get out and play, or maybe get those gardens ready. Whatever the weather, check out some fun things to do in Calgary during April 2018.
The public board spring break is over, to be sure, but there’s still the Catholic board spring break for the first week of April. Our spring break guide has rounded up some of the great ideas to keep the kids active and entertained during the break, so check it out. You might be inspired!
Swimming is always a fun outing for kids (if grouchy, add water!) and it’s even more fun when you go to the Repsol Sport Centre on a day the Floatables are out! Don’t delay, because they don’t come out often, and on April 1st, you can have all the bouncy fun in the water.
The Olate Dog Show will delight and amaze your family. (They won season 7 of America’s Got Talent!) Led by Richard Olate and his son Nicholas, the Olate Dogs are a high-energy, fast-paced canine theatrical act filled with amazing dog tricks, human acrobatics and humour.
If you have any little people in your life, you might be interested to check out the Calgary Baby & Tot Show on April 7 & 8. With interactive exhibits designed for the whole family, loads of helpful and practical information, and prizes, you might want to check it out.
There are several delightful options for kids’ theatre playing in April. I’m most looking forward to seeing The Secret Garden by Theatre Calgary. Storybook Theatre will also be presenting Huck Finn, Loose Moose Theatre for Kids is presenting Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the Jubilations Dinner Theatre Junior presents Despicable Moi.
Do you know anyone graduating, especially graduating on a budget? Let them know about Marlborough Mall’s GownTown. Over two weekends, there will be lots of lovely dresses available in a variety of styles and sizes, waiting to be purchased for only $10 each.
SUPERTRAIN will be in Calgary this April! This weekend event is the biggest model train show in Canada. Held at the Genesis Centre, it features over 70,000 sq. ft. of scale model trains, Lego and Thomas trains, model building demonstrations, historical associations, railroad art, hobby shops, manufacturers, and much more. Ride a mini-train, get your face painted, and more.
Take those city kids to the farm when Aggie Days comes to Stampede Park this month. Your kids can experience agricultural activities such as cow milking and sheep shearing. Visit the farm animals, book corner, or corn maze, and find out where your food comes from. There will also be special demonstrations in the Stock Dog Arena Trial or the equestrian event. Even better? It’s all free!

April is time for the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, and they have a star-studded line-up, amazing activities, and interesting vendors. There’s so much to do, that if you’re a fan of anything in the entertainment world, you could find it here! If you’re a Disney fan, the voices of Belle (Paige O’Hara), Ariel (Jodi Benson) and Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) will be there. Other guests include stars from mega-popular films and series like Back to the Future, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, and Anne of Green Gables.
