The Calgary International Children's Festival (Family Fun Calgary)

Explore! Journey! Discover! This May 24th to 27th, the Calgary International Children’s Festival brings the best in performing arts for young people to Calgary. This year’s excitement includes a spectacular glow-in-the-dark space odyssey, a touching and heartfelt journey of renewal, an enchanting adaptation of The Snow Queen… and that’s just the beginning!

This year’s Kidsfest line-up of performances and activities features performers from all around the world. It’s the perfect way to spend some quality time with the family and expose your kids to a wide variety of family friendly performing arts! Tiny tots can enjoy performances like Go Go Peekaboo or JUNO Award winning musicians The Swinging Belles. For older kids, Deborah Ellis, author of The Breadwinner, will inspire courage and resilience and Moon Mouse will even wow the parents in the audience!

Our top picks for shows at The 2017 Calgary International Children’s Festival include:

The Man Who Planted Trees

The Man Who Planted Trees tells the inspiring story of a shepherd who, along with his dog, journeys to plant a forest, acorn by acorn, transforming a barren wasteland into a bountiful wonderland. Touching, hilarious, and empowering, this puppet show returns to Kidsfest after delighting children – and their parents – around the world. Check out this review from their tour in England!

Secret Agent 23 Skidoo

The New York Times raves about internationally renowned kid-hop artist Secret Agent 23 Skidoo: “With positive, relatable songs, he has fast become a favourite of kiddie radio hosts. This year, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo was awarded Best Children’s Album at the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards for his album “Infinity Plus One.” Add to these eight number one hits on SiriusXM, a song on a 2012 Grammy Award winning anti-bullying compilation, and you know this is a can’t miss this show. 23 Skidoo and his break-dancers will fill the stage with irresistible energy. This is going to be a dance party!

Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey

A visually spectacular glow-in-the-dark journey that blows away any visual tricks kids get from their screen-based entertainment, Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey is a unique, one-of-a-kind performance using electroluminescent technology, music, and movement to tell the story of Marvin the Mouse. Marvin isn’t getting along with the “cool” rats at school.  To get away from the continuous badgering, he retreats into his science books and a world of fantasy. Join Marvin on his homemade rocket ship and journey to the surface of the moon for an out of this world adventure! For the performance on Friday, May 26 at 6:00 pm, the grounds will be open late and attendees are invited to wear pyjamas. It’s going to be a pyjama party!

Free Fun at Olympic Plaza

After enjoying one of the critically-acclaimed performances, join Kidsfest fora full day of fun with a wide range of free activities and entertainment on Olympic Plaza (adjacent to Arts Commons). There will be storytelling, dance workshops, roving artists, magicians, face painting, games, a Canada150 Wishing Wall, puppet making and more. All this free outdoor fun will take place Wednesday & Thursday 9:30 am – 3 pm and Friday & Saturday 9:30 am – 6 pm!
